Auxiliary Reserves

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service has a statutory duty and a legal requirement under the Civil Contingency Act 2004 to provide an emergency Fire and Rescue provision to the communities of South Wales. Our current Business Continuity Management plans have led to the creation of the Auxiliary Reserve who will provide this resilience.

Auxiliary Reserve Firefighters will be trained to deal with a range of incidents through a comprehensive initial and quarterly training program. During this training you will learn to work as part of a team, developing skills that are transferable, varied and include dealing with a range of emergency response incidents in our training centre. At the end of each year you will be given the opportunity to confirm and demonstrate your knowledge, skills and attributes that you have learnt via a number of “real live” scenarios and exercises.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service welcomes applicants from all backgrounds and candidates must be a minimum of 17 years and 6 months of age on the date of application and a minimum of 18 years of age on the first day of their Initial course to be eligible to apply. Auxiliary Reserve Firefighters are builders, consultants, stay-at-home parents, administrators, factory workers, care workers, students or people not currently employed. They are people who are able to give their time to assist the Fire and Rescue Service in return for a salary.

Applications for Auxiliary Reserve Firefighters are now closed.

The principal aim of the Auxiliary Reserve Firefighter is to protect and save people from fire and other hazards, in the most competent and effective manner, during possible Industrial Action.
