Pride of Gwent Awards 2021

There were a number of uplifting and heroic stories relayed at this year’s South Wales Argus Pride of Gwent Awards 2020/2021, which is held in association with the University of South Wales.

The Pride of Gwent Awards is open to public nominations and our unsung heroes were nominated for both the ‘Achiever Award’ and the ‘Life Saver Award’.

Nicola Wheten, Crimes And Consequences Project Manager.

Nicola Wheten who was nominated for the ‘Achiever Award’ invested her time into creating a new flagship hub, which was developed with £30,000 of Welsh Government funding. It provided a cost effective and cutting-edge home for modern-day community safety engagement. It also equipped partners with the right technology and investment to deliver excellent partnership working and community safety services. The hub has benefited communities across South Wales and will continue to do so for years to come and aims to strengthen community confidence through effective working.

Crimes And Consequences Project Manager, Nicola Wheten who received the highest recognition for the ‘Achiever Award’, said: ‘‘I feel honoured to receive such an award especially as there were so many amazing finalists. However this award is one for all who helped me implement the Hub vision. Whether that was building furniture, painting, giving a word of encouragement, sticking on the marigolds or keeping me company in the midst of all the refurb chaos.

It’s fantastic what can be achieved with a supportive and positive team not to mention the outside partnerships who cheered along the way and many have even became good friends. This Hub has already improved and even saved lives of those in the community and I’m extremely proud of what we have managed to achieve.’

Red Watch Malpas who were nominated for the ‘Life Saver Award’ were selected for their heroic effort in saving a casualty from drowning in fast flowing water in the River Usk, Newport. During the rescue, firefighters entered the water to rescue the casualty and pulled them aboard their rescue boat in order to save their life.

We want to say a massive congratulations to both Nicola and Red Watch Malpas. The work you have put in collectively not only portrays your kindness, heroism and kindness, but is a reflection of your achievement and dedication to making South Wales a safer place.

To have the chance to read about all the fantastic winners in the special Price of Gwent supplement, all information will become available via the south Wales Argus on Thursday, March 18th.
