Chief’s Peloton 2020

Going the Extra Mile for The Fire Fighters Charity

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service’s Chief’s Peloton is going virtual this year with cyclists pledging to raise funds for The Fire Fighters Charity.

The gruelling annual event, which has previously seen staff cycle from their South Wales stations to destinations such as Brighton and Torquay, this year will look a little different due to Covid-19 restrictions.

The Peloton will not be able to participate as a large group as in previous years, but will pledge to cycle at home or in their own time covering a grand total of 4,200 miles by the end of August, the equivalent of once around the UK. Supporters will be able to follow their progress on a virtual map hosted by the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service website and make those all-important donations to The Fire Fighters Charity via www.justgiving.com/fundraising/huwjakeway

The Fire Fighters Charity provides an exceptional range of mental health, physical health and social wellbeing support and advice for firefighters and their families. This year the Charity has been unable to carry out many fundraising activities due to Covid-19, this has reduced their income by £200,000 a month. To enable the Charity to continue providing essential support to those who need it most they are calling for supporters to help, and South Wales Fire and Rescue Service are proud to step up to the challenge.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Chief Fire Officer Huw Jakeway QFSM, who champions the Chief’s Peloton each year, said: “While the event may look a little different this year we are as passionate as ever about supporting The Fire Fighters Charity and the excellent work they do to support all the personnel and their families here at South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and our colleagues across the UK.

“We have had tremendous support over the past years which makes us very proud to be able to support our Charity, I am hoping to get people just as involved as before by sharing our progress on our virtual map. Thank you to all who have already made a donation, you really are making a difference.”
