Health and safety is an integral part of delivering a quality service to the public. South Wales Fire and Rescue Service recognises its statutory responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act and is committed, so far as is reasonably practicable, to ensuring the health, safety and welfare, whilst recognising a variety of health and safety needs, of its employees and others including members of the public, contractors, visitors, etc. who may be affected by Service activities.

In confirming this commitment the aims of the Services Health and Safety Policy include:

  • Appointing a Health and Safety Director to provide strong leadership from the top for managing health and safety, and supporting this by providing the necessary organisational structure, arrangements and resources
  • Ensuring suitable arrangements are in place to manage compliance with all prevailing legislation and codes of practice.
  • Providing for effective joint consultation with employees and their representatives and encouraging open positive participation in health and safety matters
  • Ensuring risks are identified, assessed and mitigated by suitable control measures and safe systems of work are in place to minimise risk of injury and ill health, so far as is reasonably practicable.
  • The provision of information, instruction, training and supervision in matters relating to health and safety and individual responsibilities ensuring all responsibilities are clearly defined, communicated and understood.
  • Providing safe arrangements for the use, handling, storage and transport of articles and substances, ensuring plant, equipment and systems are safe and without risk to health.
  • Monitoring, reviewing and auditing our procedures, learning from the outcomes and taking prompt action to correct deficiencies.
