Message from Chief Fire Officer Brian Fraser

Welcome to South Wales Fire and Rescue Service’s new website. We hope you will find it both interesting and relevant, and will continue to visit us regularly for information about the Fire and Rescue Service, on both a local and national basis.

Since our original website was launched, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service has become a matter devolved to the Wales Assembly Government and is engaged with their vision of a Fire and Rescue Service for the 21st Century. This vision can be found in the Fire and Rescue Service Framework, and the overall emphasis is that we continue to place the prevention of emergency incidents, and the protection of the communities we serve, at the heart of our organisation.

Use this website to find out some of the simple safety precautions that you can take at home, to keep your family and friends safe from fire throughout the year. Each week, you will see our most current and up-to-date Community Fire Safety message on the homepage.

One of the best preventative measures you can take is to book a FREE Home Fire Safety Check. Your local firefighters will then contact you directly, to arrange a convenient appointment to visit your home and assess your risk of having a fire in your house. This check is completely free and they will then fit working smoke alarms for you, where necessary, free of charge.

Having working smoke alarms at home really is a minimum safety standard and they are literally a matter of life or death, as they provide early warning of a fire, giving you and your family extra time to escape. Around 70% of the house fires we attend in South Wales either do not have smoke alarms or they are not working because the batteries are dead or have been removed. So, if you already have an alarm, please test yours today – it could save your life.

If you have a business, or you are responsible for fire safety at work, you should also find this website useful. We have included information and advice about the latest fire safety regulations, carrying out a fire risk assessment, and what you need to know to meet the requirements as both an employer and employee.

You can also see how we are progressing against national and local targets to improve safety, and the way we organise ourselves to ensure an effective, efficient and economic Fire and Rescue Service exists to improve public safety.

Don’t forget, you can also use this website to find out about careers in the Fire and Rescue Service, and details of how to contact us with any questions or suggestions you want to raise with us.

This website offers the means of engaging with you the public we serve in developing a modern Service that meets your needs and helps everyone understand how our targets are developed, what they are, and how we are performing against them. For this site to be successful, it relies on communications from you as well as regular updates from us the service. Please use the opportunity to help us to help you so that South Wales becomes a safer place to live in, work in and to visit.
