Since 1 April 1996, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service has been the responsibility of the South Wales Fire and Rescue Authority. Management responsibility for the Service rests with the Chief Fire Officer who is supported by five Principal Officers and a policy-making Corporate Continuity Board. When the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994 came into force on 1st April 1996, the eight county councils and 37 district councils of Wales were abolished and replaced with a single-tier of 22 all-purpose unitary authorities.
