Race Equality Scheme

As a fire and rescue Service, we have a legal requirement under the Race Relations (Amendment) Act (2000) to have a Race Equality Scheme and action plan that is reviewed at least every 3 years. We have some specific obligations under this, namely to eliminate unlawful discrimination, promote good relations between racial groups, and proactively promote equal opportunities.

We have a duty to ensure the highest standard of Service Delivery to all community members of the various groups that constitute our area of operation. This area of service covers 48% of the population of Wales (as per 2001 census data), and minority ethnic communities make up between 2% and 11% of the demographics across the 10 unitary authorities that we cover. We need to ensure that all community members have equal access to community safety initiatives, and employment opportunities.

After extensive consultation with both staff and community members and other organisations, we have completed a Race Equality Scheme and action plan. We would greatly appreciate feedback and comments on the scheme, which can be sent to diversity@southwales-fire.gov.uk
