Menter Iaith Blaenau Gwent, Torfaen and Monmouthshire now based at Cwmbran Fire Station

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service is working in partnership with Menter Iaith Blaenau Gwent, Torfaen and Monmouthshire to promote the use of Welsh in local communities. The Fire and Rescue Service has agreed to provide the newly appointed Menter Iaith Officer, Helen Williams, with office facilities at Cwmbran Fire Station.

Menter Iaith, a Welsh language initiative, is a local organisation, which offers support to communities to increase and develop their use of the Welsh language. Helen, who took up her appointment on April 1st, will be working in partnership with schools, businesses, organisations, Councils etc in Blaenau Gwent, Torfaen and Monmouthshire to increase the opportunity for children, young people, Welsh learners and Welsh speakers to use the language in all aspects of community life.

Cwmbran Fire Station Manager Jeff Scrivens said:

“This is a fantastic opportunity for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and Menter Iaith to promote the use of Welsh in all aspects of community life. South Wales Fire and Rescue Service is committed to providing services in Welsh and English. By enabling Menter Iaith to utilise one of our offices as a base we are following through with objectives that are part of the Station’s local service plan.”

Chair of Menter Iaith Blaenau Gwent, Torfaen and Monmouthshire, Lois Arnold, said:

“We are very grateful to South Wales Fire and Rescue Service for assisting us in this way and in particular to Station Manager Scrivens and his staff for making us feel so welcome and at home there. We look forward to a long and successful partnership.”

Menter Iaith’s current plans include a concert by Welsh folk singer Heather Jones on the May 10th and a series of Welsh Language clubs for welsh learners.
