So how did we do?
We monitor our referrals post intervention after 3 months on the Home Visit, after 3 then 6 months on the Safe programme and after 3, 6 and 12 months for the Firesafe programme.
We measure our effectiveness simply on whether the child or young person has continued or not with fire setting behaviour. With the Firesafe programme we also measure attitudinal change using a validated assessment tool.
Of the 29 Safe referrals:
3 non-complete (2 moved out of area, 1 not cooperating)
Of the 5 Firesafe referrals:
“I leant a lot especially not to light fires and I will tell my friends” 13yrs, Vale of Glamorgan.
“I now respect the work the fire service do” 15yrs, Monmouthshire.
“I have taken the responsibility of home safety for my family” 9yrs, Cardiff.
“It was fun, interesting and I learnt not to mess with fire because it can hurt you and others” 12yrs, Newport.
“I understand more about harming others and also to stop and think before doing things” 8yrs, Merthyr.
