Sure Start, Flying Start and Barndado's Projects

Sure Start and Flying Start Project

Sure Start and Flying Start is the Governments programme to deliver the best start in life for every child by bringing together early education, childcare, health and safety and family support.

South Wales Fire & Rescue Service is currently working with Sure Start/Flying Start and the parent and baby/toddler groups that they organise in all 10 Unitary Authorities.

The aim of the Project is to engage with parents and their young children in order to increase awareness of Fire Safety in the Home and to promote Home Fire Safety Checks.

An Education Advisor will talk to parents about Preventative measures such as Smoking, Cooking, Electrical and Candle Safety, the importance of having working Smoke Detectors are stressed and Escape Plans are discussed. Fire-fighter’s from the groups’ local station attend at the end of the session so that the children can have a look around the fire engine and have some fun squirting water!

Goodies such as colouring sheets and plastic fire helmets are given to the children.

Barnardo’s Project

Barnardo’s has been working in Wales for over a century, its purpose is to reach out to the most disadvantaged children, young people, families and communities to help ensure that every child has the best possible start in life.

Barnardo’s delivers a range of services aimed at children, young people and families living on the margins of society and struggling to overcome the disadvantages of poverty, abuse and discrimination.

The services that Barnardo’s deliver incorporates family support, young carers groups, foster carers, children and young people living with a disability, respite care services and support for black and minority ethnic (BME) communities.

It is through these services that South Wales Fire & Rescue is able to target disadvantaged and vulnerable groups of people and engage with those families most at risk of fire with the aim of raising awareness of fire safety in the home and providing home fire safety checks.
