Stick It

The ‘Stick It’ Project has so far worked with a wide variety of partnership agencies such as local housing project, Communities First, Valleys Kids, South Wales Police and many more...

'Stick It' Project‘Stick It’ is a project aimed at year 6 pupils who live in areas that have a high number of deliberately set secondary fires such as grass fires, bin fires and rubbish fires.  The aim of ‘Stick It’ is to help familiarise the young people with the Fire Service and local agencies that work in their area in order to stop anti-social behaviour and firesetting.  These agencies include the police and Youth and Community Workers.

The ‘Stick It’ project is an after school programme that runs between 8 and 12 weeks.  During the programme the young people will take part in a number of different activities arranged by the Fire and Rescue Service and other local agencies.  At the start of the programme they will be given a sticker book which they need to fill with special stickers designed by the agencies.

The only way for the young person to collect these stickers is by completing special activities arranged by the agencies.  Once the young person has taken part in the activities they will be given a sticker to put in their sticker book as a record of their achievement.

These activities include, fire station visits, healthy eating workshops, sports sessions, Police visits, recycling exercises, cycling workshops, arson talks plus much more.  Hopefully all of this will encourage the young people to become more involved in out of school activities and therefore less likely to become involved in anti-social behaviour.

At the end of the programme the young people will take part in a trip and a celebration party with all agencies involved.  The sticker books will be collected and entered into a prize draw with the chance to win an Ipod.

‘Stick It’ has already been launched and completed in the Rhydfelin area, Pontypridd with great success and a very good turn out.  Currently the project is taking place in four schools in the Maindee and Duffryn areas of Newport also with great success.

Coming soon

The Youth Support Services department is currently re-vamping and re-designing the Duke Of Edinburgh Award which hopefully will be up and running on local fire stations in 2009.
