All Wales PSE Group

All Wales Personal and Social Education (PSE) GroupThe All Wales Personal and Safety Education project (PSE), is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government, and promotes awareness of fire safety issues for children of all ages as part of the National Curriculum.

The three Fire and Rescue Services in Wales have combined to produce teaching materials in English and in Welsh, based on the PSE curriculum National Orders for Wales, which is now compulsory in all our schools.

Having a standardised all-Wales approach means that regardless of where children grow up or whether their families move from one area to another, they will be taught about fire risks, fire prevention, and what to do in the event of a fire – knowledge that could save their own lives or those of family and friends.

Fire Safety education starts as young as 5 years old, with the ‘Tanni’ initiative. This follows the adventures of a cartoon character based on a fire helmet. It explores with children the dangers of playing with matches and lighters, using the key message "Tell, don’t touch". It also covers awareness of dangers in the kitchen and appropriate fire safety. Work in the classroom is supplemented by a Fire Safety Activity Book which children take home to complete with their parents.
