There are three teams operating throughout Wales, with one team based at Ely Fire station. The team is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government for three years and is presently entering its third year. Its primary aim is to reduce arson related behaviour.

The work of the Ely based team has already seen tangible results in the reduction of car fires and anti social fire behaviour in the locality. The team is a demonstration of true partnership between the fire and rescue service and police who are co-located at Ely Community Fire & Rescue Station.

Through liaison and engagement with the local community and action centred decision making, a number of ‘gated areas’ have been created to reduce the availability of areas for cars to be abandoned and set fire to.

Whilst the project has not yet been formally evaluated it is anticipated that the successful outcomes which have already been achieved will provide the evidence for a future expansion of the team.
