The Vocational Training and Development department is an approved centre for the delivery of a range of qualifications that support the Advanced Modern Apprenticeship (AMA), inclusive of South Wales Fire and Rescue Service’s Firefighting B-Tec, NVQ (operations in the community and Control operations) and Key skills, for both Wholetime and Retained Duty Staff.
Staff in this department oversee the initial input to trainee firefighters and the training of Assessors and Internal Verifiers. They also conduct Independent Assessments on all trainees and Firefighters in development at six monthly intervals both at their base stations and at selected locations across the South Wales area.
The team supports the Fire and Rescue Service Vocational Standards Group in developing the National Occupational Standards and is working with other Fire and Rescue Services to develop an electronic portfolio in line with the watch-based PDRpro so that candidates spend less time and paper on administering their work. The department oversees the “Development to Competent” process, where they monitor portfolios with an external provider, providing the quality assurance required by the NJC Code of Practice.
