Mums, dads and children in Blaina and Duffryn will have the chance to meet firefighters and fire safety officer, Stephanie Murphy as part of this year’s Parents’ Week this week.
South Wales Fire and Rescue Service will be represented at special events in the Integrated Children’s Centre in Blaina, Bettws Day Nursery and Newport Flying Start at Duffryn Infants School this week.
Parents’ Week is run by the Family and Parenting Institute and is established as a way of getting families at the top of the political agenda nationally and locally.
This year’s theme is ‘Getting it right for families’ and there will be events running for parents and families all over the country. It is an ideal opportunity for children and family services as well as community groups to think about the activities they offer parents and whether they could do it better.
Community Safety Advisor (for early years) Steph Murphy said, “I’m really pleased to be involved in the week’s activities and I’m hoping to speak to lots of children and their parents about keeping safe from fire. The Fire and Rescue Service is always keen to ‘get it right for families’ and by talking to people during this week, we hope that we will do just that.”
Mary MacLeod, Chief Executive of the Family and Parenting Institute said: “Parents’ Week is a fabulous time; we always have such fantastic feedback from the professionals involved – and the parents who get to enjoy the events and activities.
“It’s all too easy to overlook parents – mistaking them for ‘clients’ and not addressing the specific needs that being a parent brings with. Parents’ Week is the ideal opportunity to celebrate the family as well as to take stock and assess whether the services that are being provided for mothers and fathers are the best they can be. That’s why we are keen everyone does what they can to get it right for families.”
