SWFRS asks householders to be candle safe following incident

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS) attended a call to a house fire on Gilfach Street in Bargoed on Monday the 23rd January.

Crew from Aberbargoed Fire Station responded to the call of a bedroom fire in a first floor flat just after 10pm on Monday evening, which measured approximately 10 metres by 5 metres in size. Upon arrival, two hose reel jets, one safety jet, one thermal imaging camera and four breathing apparatus were used to successfully tackle and extinguish the fire.

The bedroom fire was caused by an unattended candle and was confirmed as accidental. Fortunately, all persons were accounted for and one male occupant received oxygen therapy by the paramedic on scene as a precautionary measure.

Group Manger Matthew Jones, Head of Home safety Department at SWFRS stated, “We would like to remind members of our communities to be vigilant when using candles and ensure they are correctly situated in an appropriate stand or holder.

“We would also like to remind people of the importance of testing your smoke alarms weekly and ensure that you have a development escape plan in order should a fire occur within your property. For any further advice or guidance on fire safety in the home please visit our website”.
