South Wales Fire and Rescue Service would like to remind people of the dangers of fire in the home, especially in the kitchen this Pancake Day.Pancake Day is the day when people reach for the frying pan, lemon and sugar - but some end up needing the Fire and Rescue Service too.Whilst making pancakes it is important that you never leave any cooking or kitchen appliances unattended. It only takes a few seconds for an unattended pan or cooker to ignite and develop into a serious and life threatening fire.Pancake Day is another opportunity for the Service to educate the public about the dangers in the kitchen.
Safety advice. When using a frying pan or cooking with hot oil, remember:- Never leave the pan unattended when the heat is switched on- Do NOT move the pan if it is on fire - Never put the food in the pan if the oil begins to give off smoke - If there's a fire, get out, stay out and call us out- Supervise children in the kitchen at all times
Huw Jakeway, Acting Chief Fire Officer, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service urges “A working smoke alarm will greatly increase your chances of escaping unharmed. Have a plan and follow it - know exactly which way you will leave the house and know where you will go”.
