Firefighters Open Doors For Day Of Fun

Current Firefighters at Cowbridge Fire Station are holding a special open day to encourage more local people to find out about the work of the local Fire Station and, if interested how they can become part of the new team of Retained Duty System Firefighters.

Next Bank Holiday Monday (25th May), why not drop in to the Fire Station and enjoy the entertainment and hospitality? It’s all part of the revitalised campaign to attract new Firefighters and involve the community in Station life.

Entry to the open day is completely free and the fun will begin at 10.30am running through until around 4pm.

The open day should raise the profile of the Fire Station in the local area, which will be changing it’s crewing system from day crewed to retained as soon as enough Retained Duty System Firefighters are recruited.

The fun day will include the ‘safest BBQ in town’, a bouncy castle for the kids and a huge array of firefighting displays including the chip pan fire display, the specialist rescue unit and a demonstration showing what Firefighters can do at the scene of a road traffic collision.

The Fire Service’s mini helicopter (microdrone), usually used to survey the scene of a fire for investigation purposes, will be circling the station in the sky capturing on film the waving crowd!

Station Manager Dewi Jones said the Firefighters have been working hard to prepare for the public of Cowbridge to come and visit.

He said,

It would be really nice to see that we have the support of our community on the open day and hope that lots of people will come along to find out about what we do and have a bit of fun at the same time.

We already have a number of local people who are in the process of applying to become Firefighters in Cowbridge. We would really like to talk to anyone who is interested in this salaried and rewarding job.

‘Retained Duty System’ Firefighters are trained the same as full-time Firefighters, however, they are not based at the station when they are on call. Retained Duty System Firefighters live or work within two miles or five minutes of their Fire Station and are alerted to emergency calls via a bleeper. The job can offer a salary of over £9,000 a year, as well as full training as a firefighter and a rewarding contribution to your local community.
