At approximately 08.33 hours, Tuesday 26th July, Firefighters from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service were mobilised to an incident involving a lorry that has caught alight in the Brynglas tunnels, M4 Westbound, Junction 25 Caerleon Road - Junction 26 Malpas.
Six appliances from Maindee, Malpas, Cwmbran, Duffryn and Caerphilly Station have attended the incident.
The lorry was well alight when the first crews arrived on scene and Firefighters are working quickly to bring the incident under control and contain the fire.
No other vehicles were involved in the fire. The driver within the lorry got out safely and there were no injuries.The M4 has been closed in both directions between J24 A48 / A449 (Coldra) and J28 A48 / A4072 (Tredegar Park).A diversion via the south of Newport on the A48 Southern Distributor Road is in place.
Adrian Moyes, Incident Commander, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said;
“On approach to the incident crews were faced with large volumes of black smoke issuing from the Western side of the tunnel”.
“One lorry was well alight on arrival and crews were immediately employed to ensure no persons remained within this or any other vehicle within the tunnel”. They then proceeded to tackle the blaze and are bringing the incident under control”.
“Following liaison with other partner agencies the incident is being quickly dealt with”.
