Celebrate Safely (Business)

‘Celebrate Safely’ - that is the message from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service to all communities across South Wales this festive season.

In addition to this, the Service is also using the festive period to remind landlords and business owners of their legal obligation to carry out a fire risk assessment of their premises.

In accordance with the Fire Safety Order 2006 employers and self-employed people must carry out, or appoint a ‘competent person’ to carry out a ‘suitable and sufficient’ fire risk assessment of the risks of fire to their employees and others who may be affected by their work or business. The Fire Safety Order places the emphasis towards risk reduction and fire prevention.

 Fire risk assessment

From today, a radio campaign being aired on Capital FM and Real Radio FM, based around the theme of a ‘Christmas party menu’ highlights the devastating effects to a business and the owner if a ‘suitable and sufficient’ fire risk assessment is not carried out – loss of business, loss of income, loss of lifestyle and maybe even loss of freedom if the business owner is prosecuted and sentenced in court.

Members of the public can also phone SWFRS on 01443 202523 (between 8am – 5pm) or 01443 232000 (out of hours) use the SWFRS app to report any premises that they believe is not complying with the Fire Safety Order 2006.

Report a landlord or Business

To report a landlord or business using the SWFRS App, take a photograph of the area of concern (e.g. a blocked fire exit) using the ‘report a non-emergency’ part of the App and then it will automatically be emailed to SWFRS. If you don’t want to or are unable to take a photograph you can leave a narrative explaining the problem.

Huw Jakeway, Chief Fire Officer, South Wales Fire and Recue Service explains;

“During the festive season, people will have decorations, use more electrical appliances, have more visitors and may be smoking and drinking alcohol at home. Landlords and business owners are also more likely to have an increase in visitors to their business according to CFO Huw Jakeway.  “The message to home owners and business owners from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service is to be aware of the risks, take extra care and celebrate safely.”
