Where We Are

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service covers an area of 2,712km2 from Chepstow in the east to Porthcawl in the west, and from Merthyr Tydfil in the north to the Severn Estuary in the south. The area has a diverse topography, from the Valley’s in the north and west to the rolling countryside in the east. There are two cities, Cardiff and Newport, in the south.

Cardiff is the capital city of Wales and is the centre of Welsh government. 500,000 of the 1.4 million citizens live in Cardiff and Newport. The remainder of the population (900,000) live predominantly in the centre and north and, to a lesser extent, in the east of the area.

The area is served by 10 unitary authorities. These local government establishments provide the 24 local councillors which make up the South Wales Fire Authority.

South Wales has the most diverse communities of Wales and has an ethnic population of 2.12%. Most citizens from these ethnic groups are concentrated in Newport and Cardiff and so they form 7.5% of the total population of these two cities. The service is developing new ways of reaching out to these communities to ensure their safety and wellbeing is as high as we can make it.
