Maesteg Fire Station serves the town of Maesteg and the surrounding villages of Nantyffyllon, Caerau, Garth, Cwmfelin and Llangynwyd. The estimated population of the Station area is 25,000, covering an area of 7,456 hectares.

Maesteg Fire Station serves a diverse range of light and heavy industries; business and residential areas; several retail parks, and large rural and forested areas all within its station ground.

Community Initiatives       

• Our new Community Fire/Ambulance station was designed to meet the diverse needs of our community and as such contains many features to make any visit to the Station as pleasurable as possible
• Within the Station is a community meeting room which can be used by any appropriate local groups on a one off or regular basis free of charge. The room can hold up to a maximum of 35 people and is fitted with air conditioning, a hearing induction loop and is wheelchair accessible. • We offer a range of Road Traffic Reduction Presentations which can be held at Station or local colleges/community workshops/youth centres.  The aims of the presentations are to highlight road safety issues to young drivers.  The presentations cover issues relating to accidents and how we can prevent them from occurring (i.e.) wearing seat belts/speeding/drink and drug driving/using mobile phones whilst driving and inexperience
• We offer and carry out Home Fire Safety Checks and install free smoke alarms where required see details on the right on how to request a Home Fire Safety Check. In total we have fitted over 2500 households in the Maesteg area with smoke detectors over the past 4 years
• We visit our local Schools to educate younger children in the dangers of fire, and older children on the dangers of hazards in the house and kitchen areas
• We carry out local arson vulnerability assessments and work with local services to remove litter and other potential hazards (i.e. discarded gas bottles)
• We work with the police and the borough council to reduce the high number of deliberate car fires in and around the Maesteg area
• We take an active role in the local PACT (Police And Community Together) meetings
• We host and take an active role in the local monthly Police surgery meetings
• We continue to visit factories and industrial sites on a regular basis to maintain local risk knowledge
• We carry out 30 off station training exercises to make sure fire-fighters remain in a high state of readiness for all emergency incidents
• We aim to increase the number of retained duty system fire fighters and would welcome applications from persons able to provide cover throughout the day (0700-1800hrs). We would also like to encourage applications from females and under represented ethnic groups.

Staff

47 uniformed staff comprising 4 Watches of 7 (Red, Green, Blue, White), and a Retained Duty System Watch comprising of 18 personnel, a Station Commander plus 2 non-uniformed support staff.

History

The original Station was opened on 3rd December 1974 by Councillor V E Hart, however due to the increasing demands placed on the Fire and Rescue service both operationally and with its community initiatives a new building was proposed.

Work commenced on March 24^th 2007 on the first purpose built combined Fire and Ambulance Station in South Wales and was finally completed on 12^th July 2009. The result of which is a fantastic modern, energy efficient Community Fire/Ambulance   Station.
