Tony Redman – Young Firefighters Programme Manager

Hi I’m Tony and I have been with SWFRS for 15 years.  I started my Fire Service Career in 2002 as a Firefighter in Cardiff Central and spent a number of years on station as both Firefighter and then Crew Manager.  More recently I have progressed to take on a role in SWFRS Headquarters as the Young Firefighter’s Programme Manager. This is a highly rewarding career which involves overseeing the effective running of a programme which looks to support young people in learning new skills within a Fire Service setting.

I studied Welsh in school and was fluent from the age of 5.  Over my 15 years in the Service being able to converse in Welsh has meant that I have been able to support the organisation and our communities in a number of ways, here are a few examples:

  • By carrying out both Key Stage 1 & 2 visits to our local Welsh school ‘Ysgol Gymraeg Llyn Y Forwyn’. Interacting with students and teachers and conveying Fire
    Safety messages in Welsh.
  • By giving SWFRS specific media interviews in Welsh (both live and pre-recorded) regarding incidents in and around our local area.
  • By providing recruitment opportunities in Welsh.
  • By presenting Arson Reduction messages in Welsh to comprehensive schools.

Regardless of your initial Career choices, Welsh Language skills can be a real benefit within your Career and SWFRS is one employer who will really help you to nurture these skills.  I’ve loved every minute that I have been able to use my Welsh skillls within the workplace as it means that I have seen some great results both internally and also within our communities which always makes me happy and proud that we are making a difference.
