Introduction to Business Fire Safety

Welcome to South Wales Fire & Rescue Service Business Fire Safety web page. This area of the site provides an overview of the work we do in connection with our role, which is ensuring our built environment is safe for all. Our role is very much about educating and enforcing the Fire Safety Legislation in all buildings other than single domestic premises. We are committed to protecting our communities and reducing deaths and injuries from fires and other emergency situations.

The Business Fire Safety Department enforces the provisions of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, a piece of legislation which applies to virtually any place other than domestic premises. This legislation is commonly known as The Fire Safety Order and places the duty for ensuring a safe property with the Responsible Person for the premises. The Department has a programme for auditing all non-domestic premises in the South Wales area, based on the level of fire risk that each property presents.

Our aim with this web page is to provide guidance and advice to support Responsible Person on how they can comply with the legislation.

Fires in non-domestic premises not only have the potential to do harm to their occupants but also have a devastating effect on business. In fact, over 60% of businesses who experience a serious fire never completely recover or fail within twelve months. This consequential loss of services and employment opportunities in the community can be significant. We are keen to work with business owners to make their company fire safe: for the benefit of themselves, their workforce, the communities within which they operate and our environment.

Please explore our site; I hope you find it informative and helpful. If for any reason you require additional information or have views on how to improve the site please contact us on the number/e-mail provided. We are here to help and offer advice and support.
