Training Venue

Cardiff Gate Training and Development Centre is a relatively new training facility, purpose-built on a 3.5 acre site on the outskirts of Cardiff, close to Junction 30 of the M4.

As a Private Finance Initiative, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and the VT Group are dedicated to ensuring that the Centre delivers the highest possible standard of Fire and Rescue training.

The facility has a wide range of fire training capabilities. A variety of different fire scenarios, including simulated Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) fires in an industrial environment, and a house, bedroom and kitchen fire, can be created and enhanced with synthetic smoke. Firefighters can also use the facility to train in a range of fire behaviours, such as flashover and backdraught.

In addition to fire-based training, the Centre is equipped with facilities for rope and ladder rescue on a purpose-built tower that replicates a rock face, electrical pylon and a traditional building on three elevations.

There is also an area for road traffic collision training, including a ‘floodable’ concrete ditch.

The main teaching and administration building provides a number of syndicate rooms for Meetings, Conferences and Lectures, an Information Communications and Technology (ICT) Suite, Breathing Apparatus room and Gymnasium for cardiovascular training.

In addition to providing facilities for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, the Centre will offer Commercial Training in IT, Fire Safety, Fire Extinguisher use, and First Aid Training.
