Our Performance

Managing our performance

SWFRS records information about every incident we are called to, and uses this to analyse the location and causes of fires, road accidents and other emergencies. For the last few years, we have also been using a computer modelling systems to predict risk. We are increasingly using this information to focus our attention where it’s most needed, both through operational response and community safety work.

Performance indicators allow us to measure our own performance year-on-year and also to compare our performance with other fire authorities.

Local Indicators
We use a number of local performance indicators to manage performance.  We monitor our performance against our local indicators on a regular basis, at least four times a year.  Of the many indicators that we monitor we have selected some Key Indicators of particular interest and relevance.

Strategic and Core Indicator Performance and targets
The National Assembly for Wales provides a set of strategic and core performance indicators which all Fire and Rescue Services in Wales report against. These indicators are audited on an annual basis by RSM Tenon and the Wales Audit Office prior to their publication in this plan.

Strategic Indicators
Strategic indicators are a statutory requirement set by the Welsh Government on a number of performance areas that they and we are interested in monitoring and managing.

Core Indicators
Core indicators provide a fuller, more rounded picture of performance.

There is a requirement for Fire and Rescue Services to collect and publish information on key areas of service delivery and corporate functions Indicators.

Every year we set targets against each indicator and monitor our progress throughout the year in accordance with our performance management framework, this includes quarterly reports to senior managers, directors and elected members.

  • For 8% (1) of the Strategic indicators our performance has been maintained compared to last year.
  • For 33% (4) of the Strategic indicators our performance has declined compared to last year.
  • Please note there is one indicator for which data is not available at the time of this report.

The links below outline our performance in each of the strategic and core indicators, over a five year period with the 2010/2011 performance against target. We have also included where appropriate benchmarking against our Family Group 4, being similar Fire and Rescue Services across England and Northern Ireland.
